THE RE-ORIENTATION
THE RE-ORIENTATION
If you look st any map of ancient Egypt you will see that Egypt was divided. by an Upper and Lower Egypt. Then you may wonder why Lower Egypt is the North and Upper Egypt is the South. Well, the main reason is the Egyptians viewed the source of the Nile River as the upper part of the world. The other reason is that there was no such thing as North, South, East and West. Those cardinal directions, especially North, were invented by the Europeans. East however, has always been from antiquity the direction towards the sunrise, otherwise known as the Orient. West therefore was towards sunset, otherwise known as the Occident. North was named after the Norseman (ancient Scandinavians) of Europe.
Although the Egyptians were orientated towards the source of the Nile, the patriarchs of the Bible viewed the direction towards the rising sun as the origin of all things.
So, to most ancient peoples North meant to the left of the rising sun, and south meant to the south of the rising sun.
Well, left and right does not have the same connotation as North and South. In fact since the right is a more prominent position, that would make what know as the South of more prominence than the North.
"All pictorial archive mapping is EAST- oriented. This is not as heretical as it might first appear. The Bible itself is Eastoriented too, as the Hebrew words for the points of the compass indicate..."
ים yam – west, sea
קדם qedem – east
תימן teman – right, south
שמאל smol – left, north
"We use north as our major orientation such as in maps which are always oriented to the north. While we use the north as our major direction, the Hebrews used the east and all other directions are oriented to this direction. For example, one of the words for south is teymanfrom the root yaman meaning "to the right." Quoted from: “The East, Time, Eternity, the Universe and the Origin of All Things” By Richard Brown
So, what we have is the Egyptians viewed the source of the Nile being to the right of the rising sun and the direction towards the rising as the most prominent positions on earth. That being East and South as we call them now. But, then again who is to say why the magnetic poles should be north and south rather than opposites like left and right or in regards to polarity positive and negative. To be frank, in English, the connotation of North is upwards, but as we can see the upper part of the world for the Egyptians and the Hebrews was either the Orient or to the Right of the rising sun. Curiously enough there is a map of Alkebu-Lan by Naye Bara Arabu Na Ulaye 1260 AH or 1844 AD that shows African prominently positioned upside down as we may see it, but that was the way most ancient people saw the world. Even the star called Polaris, although it is also called the north star, who is to say that is the upper part of the universe. Is there a north or upper part of the universe?
